just got the airport wireless router ... question about 'n'

how do i know when I am using 'n' on my MBP? thanks.

also, how would my roommate who has windows know if he is using it? thanks

If you set up the AEBS to use the 5Ghz only setting only .n devices can connect.
So if it's set that way and you cant connect you know you're not using .n
