As title states - after owning my current iMac for nearly 20 months I have just heard the Apple boot chime. I bought the iMac running SL, upgraded to Lion and now run ML and not once has the iMac ever chimed on boot up. It has always run without any faults whatsoever. However, a few days ago I had occasion to reset the pRAM which caused the iMac to boot chime. Since then, whenever I boot the iMac I hear the chime. Question is though, why has it never chimed from new?

Glitch in the pRAM maybe? The startup chime is tied to the hardware selftest, so presumably your hardware is fine, not exactly sure why it stopped for so long. Probably have to check with Apple on that one.

if your volume is on mute at shut down it won't chime when you boot up

Volume rarely if ever on mute.

To be honest the fact that it has "never" chimed hadn't registered with me until the pRAM reset, I nearly jumped out of my skin when it went off. It should have registered though as it always worked on my other Mac and the Mini. It is somewhat strange that it has never worked previously though.
