just purchased and hooked up a WD mybook external HD, the drive spins down on the HD but my iMac doesnt sleep while its plugged in. how can i fix this?

Well as far as the drive itself spinning down after a few minutes of not being used you cannot change that on MyBook series drives as it is "feature" built into the MyBook enclosures according to Western Digital's support documentation (and it cannot be changed in the Energy Saver preference pane in Sytem Preferences BTW).

As far as it not letting your system sleep, I would suggest you do a little digging around in the Western Digital knowledgebase documents in the Support section of www.westerndigital.com I never had that as a problem with my MyBooks before I sold them, but they were the Home Editions not the Studio Edition so there may be something specific to that edition. Good luck.
