Unless you are using memory intensive applications you won't notice much of a difference. Still wise to stuff it full at the current prices though since it *will* eventually be useful.

Yep indeed does. Final Cut runs great in 12Gig Not sure of the OP's apps though. If he is going to run VMware or Parallels then stuff the thing full. But a bit of word processing, iPhoto, light gaming and web surfing that is pretty much what most folks do - the standard 4 gig works fine.
