I've been using a 5s until now and i was able to buy a new iphone 7 for 500 Euros. Wasn't sure about buying a 2 year old phone or if i should wait until the upcoming updates, but i'm a fairly simple user (just want a better camera / larger screen from the 5s) and the new should come in at least +300 euros more.

I've always used my 5s without case/screen protector, is the 7 more fragile? Are screen protectors / case generally recommended?

Edit: Current price structure (in sweden) is:
iphone 7 = 600 euro
iphone 8 = 750 euro
iphone X = 1070 euro

Since i paid 500e for the 7, even when new phones are released 8 will at most be dropped to 670 or so euros, X maybe 950?

Is there any justification for paying 170 more euro for a 8 over a 7? The X i find outrageous expensive and i have zero interest in paying a grand for a phone.

You don't need the latest & greatest;
I always used a protector; even a cheap silicon sleeve;
...got my headphone cable caught on the handle of a shopping cart @ the grocery store & dropped my sisters phone & the screen smashed into at least 2 million pieces.
accidents happen.

You should've waited another two months. New generation iPhones means cheaper prices for the then older ones...

The order hasn't shipped yet and i got quite a long return period, but will the 8 be that much cheaper? The 7 is already discounted (normal = 600e, but store had 13% sale on everything).
If there is a better option, i'm all ears.

So even with a 100e discount the iphone 8 will be 650 euros.

Going from 7 to X i can see being a big step up, but at twice the price. Lets assume the 8 will be 150e more in september, is the 8 really worth the extra money?
-slightly faster processor?
-slightly better camera?

I'm the guy who buy a phone and use it for 4 years before i change, so if other options would be better im interested.

I mainly use the phone to use the internet, camera and simular. No games or demanding apps.

iPhone X would have came down to $700 if you would have waited two months;

All prices shift down when new models come out. And the model that stops being on sale officially by Apple will be dumped at low prices at big chains like Saturn. What country are you from by the way? Might want to add your country to your profile, always handy to know.

The problem with older devices is:
the iOS changes & updates, rendering your device obsolete via software.
:confused:

Support goes back to 6 right now running iOS11 but only because after 5 the phones went to 64bit processors and iOS 11 doesn’t support 32bit.

I don’t see why a 7 wouldn’t be able to handle updates for the next few years. Apple won’t just abandon all its users with home button devices by not supporting the 64 bit operating system until new phones go to 128bit architecture and the iOS can’t support 64bit.

The X will drop to 850 at the most, more likely it will drop to 900, Apple will stop making it so they will charge a lot for it still.

The only phone that you should consider is the 8 over the 7, it may drop in price maybe by 150, or 100.

But if you got a 7 for 500, you’ll not get an 8 for that I doubt not this year.

I dropped my IPhone face down on some gravel and the screen looked cracked. A family member also had a cracked screen after a drop. But it turned out in both cases it was the Belkin screen protector that cracked, not the screen. It was a great investment.

I think I would return it and wait til September. Worse that could happen then would be you would get the 7 even cheaper if the 8 or X isn’t cheap enough. Oh and I’ve heard they’re actually Discontinuing the current X right before or right after x2 is released. The new x is suppose to be $100 cheaper.

It wouldn’t make sense to keep the iPhone X in their line up with the debt of the 2018 iPhone X. Reason being it would directly compete against the newest X at a lower cost and the consumer would be drawn to that. It ultimately *could* consume the 2018 X, which is the last thing Apple would want with their took of the line iPhone.

Update: I just got the iphone 7 today. It feels huge compared to my 5s. I really like it and based on my use it should last me many years (+3).

What i don't like is that it's much more slippery than my previous, so i need to get myself a case.
Is the official silicone case from apple any good or is other cases generally recommended?

I’ve been using the official silicone case for about 3.5 months now on a 7+. It’s a really nice case in my opinion and definitely adds grip. Only complaint I have about it is when my hands are dry it can make it worse for my hands.
