Well their servers were slammed, as anyone's would be. Just think of all the scalpers from China with bots, scalping rings in the US, and around the world trying to get as many as possible.
Then add in all the legions of fans and techies, and people who are trying the apple store "just to see if its being hammered" and you got a BUSY day.
