I was always interested in alternatives like the low cost Pine Phones, the Librem 5 (from Purism) and the older Jolla phone(s) but they are all rough around the edges. Then I seen the new Jolla phone pre-order was open with a decent relatively lower price.

Now that it’s back for a third time with something modern I think it’s time to jump in and start supporting a third player in the market. Isn’t that what we need? Between Google and Apple they can pretty much collude to do what they want to us. Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather that (especially software wise) from US companies. But another freedom loving part of the world historically has been Europe and in the 2000s chances are you had a Nokia at some point, when they dominated the market. Fun times right? I think a few ex engineers from Nokia are working with Jolla.

I think this company is one of the rare gems from Europe that seems to have been around longer than a lot of startups. A third evolution to the phones and them actually being usable day to day says a lot too. The outgoing Jolla was rough from reviews but slowly getting better, this new one isn’t specially marketed as a ‘community phone’ so is now the time to get onboard?

I don’t expect it to be an Apple experience, or a Samsung / Google experience when you sign into everything. Though I am trying to break free from that. Back to taking photos on my phone then… syncing to my computer. I’m fed up with my life being on someone else’s computer (the cloud).

If I can’t trust Apple or iCloud then I can’t trust anyone else - and even if I opt out of iCloud, or the alternatives over in Android land, if I back up my devices to them they can still hand it over to authorities can’t they? What on earth can you or me do about it. This phone and OS combo gives hope, perhaps the lack of app integrations and cloud services is the detox we all really need. Perhaps I should get a red cap and write ‘make phones phones again’?! (too far) lol

Let us know how it goes! I'd do the same for giggles but they don't ship to the US. Linux phones fascinate me, so I'm dying to see this thing in action!

If they'd made a slightly smaller one, I would have purchased.

I shared this feedback on socials and got lots of replies of agreement.

Hopefully in the future someday. 🤞

Definitely. It will be into next Spring by the sounds of it before any of these ship. They have always fascinated me but they’ve always had that ‘not ready for mainstream use’ caveat, even the old Jolla is marked ‘community phone’. I used to care about limitations like issues using banking apps or Microsoft Authenticator for work, now I don’t care, although it’s nice, they can either support SMS messages and as for banking, I can tether the phone to my laptop at a cafe or in the car if something truly can’t wait… failing that, I can phone or visit the bank or use an ATM - you know? I used to back myself into a corner and say “I NEED these things or I can’t live”, but it wasn’t that long ago I was living just fine without them. I’m not sure if this thing has a wallet app, but even so, my iPhone has a magnetic wallet attached and I’ve been carrying my bank card everywhere anyway so these previous show stoppers aren’t stopping me anymore.

They do say they will be bringing it to the US if the interest is there, you can register interest on the site!

Maybe in the future. If any vendor is going to listen and consider it, I guess it’s these guys desperately needing to sell more phones to people to get a foot hold.
