I just went to the RadioShack at Union Square in New York. They guys said that they'll have Ipads tomorrow, however they will only sell them in a bundle with AppleCare and a cover. I don't know if they just do it for the profit or to screw scalper but it is BS!

Buy it, return the cover and unused AppleCare.

Glad to know that this radio shack employee is the spokesperson for the entire company. Of course this makes sense!

That's why I specified the RadioShack that I went to. I'm just sharing what I was told. remember MacRumors:)

Radio Shack

I got mine from Radio Shack this morning - a 32 GB AT&T in black. They pushed very hard for me to get applecare and the case, but it was not required.

It seems to me that it would be a violation of their reseller agreement (although, admittedly, I do not know what is included in that agreement) with Apple to require a warranty to be purchased.

Nothing would surprise me about Radio Shack.

They probably get a bonus/commission from AppleCare sales. It's fairly common in retail.

I remember them doing this with the iPhone 4 when they had their specials going on. I was told over the phone that for them to hold it for me I had to buy a phone accessory of some sort at the store. I said sure, and just returned it the next day to the radio shack near my house.

ToysRus did the exact same thing with the Wii when it was hot. The Wii would come in and sell like crazy, people calling everyday, etc.

So local TRU (store manager decision) made the decision to only sell Wiis to people in bundles, forcing people to buy extra accessories, games and even a stupid protection plan. This went on for almost a year.

Just saying what Radioshack is doing is not anything new.

Of course they do...but to make it a prerequisite for a hardware sale is bound to violate some term in the reseller agreement, or else they would all be doing it.

Yeah, from what I've noticed, Radioshack tends to push accessories pretty hard when making a large purchase. They pushed my wife and step daughter to get a case and screen protectors when they bought their iPhones.

I didn't really think it was that big of a deal then, but later it sort of pissed me off because they could have gotten cheaper/better cases elsewhere.

Well, I would have gotten a case from them, but they didn't have any leather smart covers, so I decided to wait.

yep their employees get commission on accessories that they sell. i used to work there before i went to college :( haha

I'd be surprised if they get SPIFFs or commission on Apple product. Esp. since the shack sells many brands now - used to be on everything they sold.

i was at a radioshack store this morning as well.. the employee even said they got instruction on requirement of activating the 3G as a requirement to purchase the 3G model.

I insisted it shouldn't be since even the Apple store no longer required that. And they called their manager to find out how to do that.

I am glad they didn't push me into get the Apple Care nor any protective case...

Proud owner of a 32G / 3G iPad2 . The best part is I only waited at line for 40 minutes before it opened. The store phones kept ringing and I am glad the two associates only focused on serving the customers in line... but they worked way tooo slow...

i spoke with a radioshack employee as well over the phone..

he says that iPad's would be released, but not throughout the entire nation. only certain radioshacks is what he told me.

also, he says that 'we didn't get an email yet' so it looks like theyre waiting on it to come in

Even before that, Game Spot did the same thing when the Xbox 360 was super hot and hard to get. They would make you purchase all kinds of outrageous accessories, usually doubling and sometimes tripling the price of the system.
