JVC Camcorder not appearing in iMovie 09

I just got my new iMac. yay!
I plug in my camcorder (which is FireWire 400 - but I use a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter) when I have iMovie 09 open, then I go to import video - and it only has iSight as an option!
The camera is a JVC model no. GR-D850AA

Can you help me please someone?

Does/has it worked in Windows? And usually on MiniDV camcorders (like my Sony Handycam), you have to be in "Edit" mode (likely a different name on your JVC) in order for iMovie to detect it.

I haven't tried it on Windows, but it has worked on a Macbook Pro plugging directly into a FireWire 400 port. I have got the camera in the 'play/playpack' mode.
I'll probably go to an electronics store and see if I can get a cord for my camera which plugs into USB ...
