I'm using a Macbook Pro and Imovie. My parents bought a JVC GR-D40E a few years ago and never really used it. So i thought I'd take it to have a mess about with.

But, I've plugged it in via the USB (it must be a cheaper model and doesnt have a firewire port), but the mac doesn't recognise it at all. When i go into Imovie camera capture, it only gives me the option of my built in web cam.

Anybody any clue? I have it in play mode also, so thats not the problem. Searched for a driver, but only see the drivers for windows. Anybody else use this camera with a Mac?

According to the manual for this on JVC's website, it does in fact have a DV port on the side panel just below the USB port.

Here you can connect a firewire cable (4 pin - 6 pin) which you connect to the firewire port on your Mac. Then, set the camcorder to 'Playback' mode and click 'Import' in iMovie.

Here is the link to download the manual in PDF form. Check page 33 for details on how to connect this to your Mac not using USB.
