Keep 2nd display connection alive (Detect Displays)

I have a MacBook hooked up to my TV running XBMC. I have an HDMI switch, for switching from the MacBook to other devices. The problem is that when I turn the TV off, or switch the HDMI for a while, the MacBook loses connection to the TV when I switch back. So, I have to manually open the MacBook, and click on "Detect Displays", and voila, everything is fixed. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I want the MacBook to assume it's always connected to the TV. (The TV is set to be the primary; and when it loses connection, it makes the MacBook the primary).
