Keep external drive active (10.7.5)

I'm using an external drive for my iTunes library since i use an SSD for my main drive.

iTunes runs into hangs because it waits for the drive to become active which either happens slowly or not at all (Sometimes i need to open the drive in Finder and make a change for the drive to spin up :/)

Any advice on options to make the drive stay spinning or make it more speedy?

It depends on the make and model of the drive in question...Some have such aggressive sleep / autopark features that it's impossible to keep them spinning...what make, model and size is the drive?

Its a Seagate Free Agent 1.5TB drive
