I have an iPhone 5s 16gb for sprint which is practically new. My friend had a couple of upgrades on his family plan and ended up giving me one for free as a gift. Its been a while now and no unlock solutions have been announced. I am on at&t and someone has offered to trade me their used samsung galaxy s4 (at&t version) for my iphone. Sprint is coming out with its new unlocking policy which will take effect in 2015, allowing them to unlock phones for domestic use but I'm not sure if it applies to phones from this year.

an even trade should be a S5 for a 5S not an S4

IDK if your sprint iphone will work w AT&T, I know the sprint 5S phones are the least valuable ones due to it not being compatible w some carriers or a carrier can't really remember.

The only reason I am considering switching is because my current iphone is the 4s. Btw, sprint iphones are compatible with all carriers but the issue is that sprint feels the need to software block all other carriers and has the worst unlocking policy which applies for overseas use only.

Why would you downgrade to such an old handset?

Samsung S5? Maybe
Samsung S4? No.

Regardless, think about your usage, and what phone suits your needs.

For me, even though some Android phones are nice these days, if it doesn't have iTunes, iMessage and Photostream, it's a non starter for me.

Would it make sense to trade the Sprint 5S, which is of no use to me besides using it as an ipod unless sprint changes its policy, for an unlocked 5C, which I would be able to use with at&t?

There are no freebie upgrades anymore, assuming he is on the right plan.

Sure, provided that they would give you enough for trading it in. I have the unlocked 5S which works great on AT&T and T-Mobile.
