Keeping a MBP plugged into the mains?

With my old iBooks, if I was at my desk working, I'd always keep the machine plugged in, and also at night.

Is that actually a wise thing to do. I certainly noticed that the machine gets noticeably hotter when the mag lock is in place.

What do 'normal' users do?

In terms of battery longevity, it's good to keep the machine plugged in when possible.
