Keeping a remote drive connected

I have a desktop mac with a shared external hard drive. I connect to this drive from my laptop when I am connected to the same wireless network.

Is it possible to cause this drive to automatically reconnect when available?

Also, can I stop the annoying disconnect window from popping up when I leave the network?
