Keeping 'My Photo Stream' on Mac

How can I permanently save the photos in My Photo Stream on my Mac? I see them listed under 'Photos' and 'My Photo Stream.' Will the photos disappear when they are eventually erased from my photo stream due to only the most recent 1,000 being saved?

EDIT: I just ran a test in which I took a photo, confirmed it upload to My Photo Stream, then deleted the photo and confirmed it was removed from My Photo Stream. The photo, however, is still listed in my Photos app on the Mac, so I believe the Photos program will automatically import photos from the My Photos Stream.
