iPod Keeping/Transfering Playcounts to new Mini

Evening folks,

I've seen this on here before, and I've searched to no avail. How do you keep your play counts etc when transfering to a new comp. I'm getting a new mini end of the week and i'll need to move everything over to that from my PB G4.

They're kept with the playlist data in the iTunes Library data files. Basically, if you have iTunes set to handle your music files (Advanced section of iTunes Preferences) then you just have to copy across the iTunes folder from the old Music folder to the Music folder on the new machine. Of course, this is assuming all your music is in that folder too. Within the iTunes folder should be two data files (one ends in XML) and an iTunes Music folder too. If you retain this file structure, tell the new version of iTunes to use this folder for it's music, then you should retain all your old library settings. :)

If that doesn't make any sense then I'm sorry. Feel free to ask what's going on. I started babbling - it's been a long day at work. :p
 
To paraphrase MJ's post, set your PB to Target Mode and copy over everything in ~Music/iTunes from the old computer to the new one and you'll be fine...

FWIW the XML file is only the "human readable" version of iTunes Library (.itl on Windows), which is exported every time you exit iTunes. Keep everything in place and you'll be fine.

Alright guys...I tried this and it didn't work, all my album art went away as well (I think, it's not on my iPod anymore anyways.) I just noticed, i'm at work and don't have my PB with me.

Is that mentioned xml file under iTunes Folder on the computer or would it be stored with the folder i directed the music to? i.e. iTunes Music on my external drive.

If I move the data and xml files form the one on the laptop to where the music is, then I should be ok?

BTW...if I lost everything, I really don't care, so it isn't a biggie...

Album Art is stored within the MP3 and M4A files, so if you attached album art to the files, it should still be there at least in iTunes. Check if your iPod is set to sync album art, and if so and it isn't working: Turn syncing of album art off, update your iPod and then turn album art syncing back on. That usually has the effect of recreating the iPod's album art database.

Usually the iTunes library file (.itl on Windows) and the XML file are in the main folder of your library, with all your music in folders under that.

Thanks. I didn't turn off show album art on the iPod options. (Don't think so anyways...:confused: )I know it can be very wonky...I'll try the turing off and back on. That fixed the jumble problem that happens sometimes. It should be on the song, I selected the entire album and ctl clicked, the i drug the art to the art box. If it's gone, it's gone, I'll just have to spend 2-3 days going through again...only 6000 songs to go...:)

As far as the XMl stuff, I copied the enitre folder i had on my external, it was named itunes music and had the xml file and the other one, the a folder with all my music in it. So, according to that, it should have worked? Again, no biggie...I'll mess with it tonight.
