Keeping your old number on O2

Hi, my friend has just got himself an iPhone and since he was already with O2 he wants to keep his old number. How long does it take to transfer the number and while the number is being transferred, will he be able to use his old sim card?

Took me about 30 seconds. During the activation in iTunes it asks you for the old O2 number and it transfers it right there and then. There is no need for a temporary number.

The number transfer happened instantly when I transferred.

It depends on which service provider on o2 you are with:

o2 direct - same day
o2 carphonewarehouse - 7days

There must be something more to it than that because my contract was from CPW and it took under a minute.
