For those not aware in the case, Michael Skakel was charged with the murder of his 15 year old friend Martha Moxley back in 1975. He served 11 years and appealed the conviction claiming he was not defended properly by his lawyer. A judge last month agreed and granted a new trial. today he was released from prison on a 1.2 million dollar bond.

Wait, what the ****? The dates here are completely out of whack.

He was charged in 1975, then served 10 years. That's until 1985. Then he appealed, and the judge agreed he was not defended properly in 2013. That's 27 years later (totaling 37 years since he was charged).

And now a new trial is set 6 years from now, making it 43 years since he was charged, or 33 years since he stopped serving?

EDIT: Okay, after reading the article, it makes more sense -- he wasn't charged until 2002.

The murder happened in 1975. It sat cold for 2 decades. The conviction was 11 years ago.
Skakel was convicted of beating Moxley to death with a golf club when both were 15. His older brother, Thomas, and a Skakel tutor named Kenneth Littleton, came under police suspicion, but the case remained unsolved for nearly 25 years until Skakel was charged with the murder at age 39.

The case has attracted widespread attention because Skakel, now 53, is a nephew of Ethel Skakel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

Here is a good timeline of the case.
