Not sure what’s going on here, someone might be able to shed some light on it.

I was just playing some minecraft and ran into the out of memory error. This seemed odd for two reasons:

1) I didn’t have much running, just minecraft, safari, textedit and my minecraft server application. Pretty basic stuff.
2) I have 20GB of RAM and pretty much NEVER go through it all.

So I popped open activity monitor only to find that the kernal_task is taking up over 11GB of my RAM. I can’t say i’ve ever seen it go higher than 2 before now so something is definitely acting up.

Coupled with other issues I’m having I wonder if a clean install of Mavericks would be best, try the regular update again, or just hope a patch fixes everything. For now though has anyone seen activity like this before? After restarting my computer it’s back down to 991.3mb but that still seems slightly elevated for kernal_task.
