I have a 2011 21.5" iMac running OS 10.8 (started on 10.6 i think) with 12 gig ram (2 x 4 g and 2 x 2 g). In the year and a half I've been using it, it has always had occasional kernel panics. I kept the system up to date, submitted reports when it crashed, but never really did anything proactive to solve the issue. Recently, things got much worse.

Two days ago, I got a kernel panic. I restarted the system, and for the first time ever got a kernel panic on the boot up. I then tried booting in safe mode, but still got a KP. I ran the apple hardware test in normal mode and it reported no problems. I then tried running it in extended mode and it froze both times during the ram check (when I say "froze", i mean that the screen did not change after 16 hours and the mouse didn't respond).

I removed the extra 8 gigs of ram and ran the extended AHT on the reduced system. No errors were reported. So i tried booting up again in normal and safe modes, and I still get a kernel panic. Any suggestions?

Here is an abbreviated the panic message (since I'm typing all this out, I'm omitting the memory addresses. let me know if there's something specific that I should include):
