When I switch on my 24" 2008 iMac, the apple logo appears as does the spinning wheel below. Then, after 15-20 seconds I get a kernel panic and have to hold the power button to restart. This happens every single time, I cannot get to the desktop.

I have tried:

Resetting PRAM and SMC - no help
Booting to the Install CD - it kernel panics while still on the apple logo.
Booting from an external SuperDuper clone of a working drive - it crashes on the apple logo
Booting into Safe Mode - it kernel panics
Troubleshooting the RAM by removing one of the sticks and trying it, removing the other and trying it. This does not help.

I have also run the complete diagnostic test (hold D when booting) and this has found no problems.

Can anyone help me please? I am 90 days out of my warranty and would appreciate any assistance. Thank you.
