Kernel Panic: "vfs_mountroot() failed" - bad USB drive?

Folks,

I just got a good deal on a early 2011 13" Macbook Pro 2.3 Ghz i5 / 16GB of RAM (for $600, no kidding). I put in my USB thumb drive made with DiskMaker X and my 10.9.2 image, and I get the image attached.

Trying not to freak out here - do I just need to reformat the drive and redo my image? Downloading a fresh copy of 10.9.3 now.

Does it boot from internet recovery or even just the regular recovery partition?
