Hello,
I have a G4 400 (single) "Gigabit" Powermac that I'm trying to upgrade to OS10.4 Tiger. The problem is, whenever I insert the install DVD and follow its instructions to restart, I get a crazy grey screen with power button and a message about Powermac 3.3 something driver failed...

I successfully installed 10.3.9 but I cannot ever seem to get the tiger install to work!~!!
It had OS 9.x (9.0.x I think) until a week ago, am I doing something wrong

The specs are:
G4 400 Single
Gigabit Ethernet
640mb (64mb+64mb+512mb) Ram
20GB (OS9)+80GB(OS10.3.9) Hdd's
plus everything standard...

Please help if you can!!!

Normally I'd suggest swapping out RAM, but that's a bit difficult when Tiger requires 256 MB. Remove the two 64s and see what happens anyway.

Ok, will do.

The exact message is:
panic(cu 0 caller 0x002DFC88): Unable to find driver for this platform: "Powermac3,3".

...

bottom reads: Darwin Kernel Version 8.3.0....
"We are hanging here"

Just thought of something else: Are you trying to install a retail version, or are you using the install DVD that came bundled with a different computer (which you're apparently not allowed to do under the licence)?

I tried swapping out the Ram, switching slots, swapping+switching slots, disconnecting each Hdd respectively, updating G4 firmware, updating OS9, installing OS10.3.9 with all updates... always the same error message...

Also to answer your question, no, it is the brand-new boxed version. I bought it from the Apple Store online to upgrade with.

Can I install Tiger to a network drive (ie. install it to the PM's Hdd using my PB over the network?)

When I boot into 10.3 I can see the PM's Hdd's on my Pb...

just ordered the FW cable, we'll see :)

still though, it confuses me why OS10.3 can run fine, while 10.4 cannot even load the installer... hopefully if it ever gets installed it won't be too unstable...
