I get recurring kernel panics on my 2006 white MB. Sometimes I can use it for hours at a time, sometimes it shuts down even before I can login. Since my MB is five years, I'm almost sure it's a hardware issue but I don't know exactly what's wrong. Can anyone interpret the following kernel log?

By the way, for whatever it's worth, both the HDD and RAM are third party that I upgraded myself a couple of years ago but I've only been having problems now.

Check your memory. Run the diagnostics off of the original disks and make sure to run the extended memory test.

Have you tried repairing permissions?

Sounds like CPU or Logic board... when issues are so intermittent, they can be quite frustrating to diagnose.

Try reseting the PRAM (I don't think it will make a difference...)

You could also try replacing the memory and HD. If you have the old components from before the upgrade, you could swap those back in to see if the issues are resolved.

As a last desperate attempt, you could try reflowing the logic board but that is not a guaranteed fix (it simply repairs broken or fractured solder connections).

The last option is really a last resort and only do it if you KNOW your logic board is the culprit.

Cheers!

I don't have the original discs anymore but I ranRember and it didn't find anything wrong with my memory. I also repaired disk permissions (and "repair disk" too) quite a number of times and I noticed that I seem to be able to use my MB longer before it KPs again but I'm not sure if it's coincidence.

sporadicMotion: I already reset the PRAM and nothing changed. I think I threw the old RAM and HDD away when I was sure that the new ones worked lol. If my screen flickers, does that mean that it is indeed the logic board that's causing the problem?

Wish I could give you a definitive "yes" or "no". Do you know anyone you could borrow a spare drive from just to test? Like I said, reflowing is a last resort and you really don't want to do it unless you are 100% sure it's the logic board.

Also, research reflowing so you know EXACTLY what you'd be getting into.

Wait, what's little snitch? Uninstall that. I'm not 100% but it looks like it's bypassing the kernel.

Bypass that and see what happens!

Little Snitch is a firewall. I don't have my MacBook with me right now but I'll see if not running it changes anything when I get home.

Yeah, it looks like there's been a long list of updates for it that include fixes for kernel panics.

You're running version 2.2 and there have been 11 separate updates. It's currently at version 2.3.6 which specifically fixes kernel panics that occur if you're running drop box.

Do you run drop box?

Uninstalling Little Snitch seems to have worked but, like I said, sometimes I could use my MacBook for hours at a time without a KP. I'll post again if I get another one.

Thanks.

Well I just got another one. :| At least I was able to use it for three days before it happened again.
