In 4+ years of using this machine, I've never seen kernel_task break 4% CPU usage, but 15 minutes ago I was minding my own business, just working as usual, and suddenly it started crawling.
A quick check of Activity Monitor showed that kernel_task was using 50% plus of my processor power, and it remained at that level for several minutes until I rebooted (at which point it spent a heck of a long time on the grey screen, but it's now back to normal).
Machine is a dual 2.0 PowerMac G5 running Tiger. Any idea what might be going on?
