I did a reinstall of OSX over this ad it is still here.

before it was using in excess of 3 gigs of ram... it used to run horribly slow and was super buggy. my MBP is out of warranty but the genus bar guys have no idea what the hell it is.

does anyone know what it is doing? Thanks!

The kernel_task is a representation of the kernel which is the heart of the operating system.
Everything else relies upon it.

From your screenshots everything appears to be fine, as both the memory pressure and CPU usage are low.

It just seems pretty high on the list and no other mac has it listed at all...

I can guarantee that every Mac running OS X will have it,
and it will be high on the list, often at the top for both CPU and Memory.

The reason why you don't see it in a lot of peoples screen shots is because they have Activity Monitor set to show their processes rather than all processes, so it is hidden.

Alright. Thanks! my MBP was god awful slow (about a minute of dock bouncing before any signs of the app opening... im trying to avoid that this time) before the reset i didnt know if kernel_task was to blame.

Has it stopped now? Could have been Spotlight re-indexing.

Don't use any of that gesture enabled stuff. Never saw the need.

Is it a good idea to install windows while on beta firmware.

I believe people were having issues with the beta of Yosemite and partitions so probably not the best idea.
