Uhh...
I have noticed recently that kernel_task in my activity monitor creep up to 100-150MB of real memory and 1-1.3gb or virtual memory during normal operation (using common apps like itunes, textmate, transmit, quicksilver and maybe transmission). Is this normal? I have never noticed it creeping up that high before.

Same here.
I suspect it's doing some sort of caching, as it seems to eventually get to about 10% of the memory on whatever mac I have.
