Key things to inspect when buying used Macbook

I'm about to buy a macbook pro on craigslist and would like a few pointers on what to look for when buying a used laptop. I'm new to macs and would like to know how to verify laptop specs. I'll be keen to check for any dead pixels on the screen. I heard there is also a page on apple's website where you can check for the warranty remaining by entering the serial #.

What else should I look for when buying a used laptop? Is there a way to check the laptop is not stolen.
