For folks with big thumbs who just hate typing on the default tiny virtual keyboard on your iPhone or iPod Touch, there is a great solution. Keyboard 2 has been released, and it features many interface improvements to the original and new features to help those with big thumbs type with more comfort. That claustrophobic feeling and the anxiety of typing on a cramped onscreen keyboard should be alleviated greatly with the bigger, full screen virtual keyboard.

Keyboard 2, like its predecessor, features a full screen virtual keyboard. It turns all available screen area of your mobile iOS device into a keyboard, thus making each key much bigger than the device’s default keyboard. This is a great alternative for those who are having problems with the default keyboard. With a full screen keyboard, users can type without always hitting the wrong keys.

Keyboard 2 is divided into 2 modes. One is the viewing mode. Here you can view all of the text you have typed. The other mode is the typing mode. This is the mode which users input texts. As you type, texts will populate the screen from top to bottom. But you can exit the full screen typing mode with a tap of button to the top left. When you’ve exit the full screen typing mode, your virtual keyboard will get a little smaller, but still bigger than the default one. Typed text will only appear in the space above the virtual keyboard.

The full screen keyboard displays texts directly on screen. In previous versions, problems arise when words and sentences completely block the view of the keyboard. It also looks “messy” when users input text via the onscreen keyboard.

But in Keyboard 2, the developer tries to solve the situation with customizable background, highly customizable text size to display typed text, many fonts color to choose from, and more keyboard opacity and color options. Best of all, all of these options can be fine tuned with gestures. For example, you change the background with a 1-finger swipe. The text size can also be changed from tiny fonts to large fonts by the 2-finger pinching gesture.

Keyboard 2 also offers many important integration into your everyday tasks. With a tap of a button, Everything you’ve typed with be auto-populated to your email, SMS, and Google search. It also has Facebook integration and simple button for cut and paste.

What is really astonishing is the level of customization available with Keyboard 2. The font size of the texts can be changed from microscopic texts to a word that fills the entire screen. Best of all, this is all done through the pinching gesture. You don’t need to keep on entering a font size until you are pleased with the result. A variety of backgrounds is also very nice. Other customizations via touch gestures also make Keyboard 2 very “cool” and user friendly.

After some customization, you can really start to type fast with Keyboard 2. The bigger screen lets me type accurately and quickly on my iPhone 4. Many parts of the review is actually done with keyboard 2.

The 1-touch integration with email and sms is really nice. I suspect many users will use this as their default app for entering text for email and SMS. The keyboard layout is also excellent. It maximizes productivity by placing only the most important keys on screen.

Second, even though there are tons of customization we can apply on our keyboard to make the typing experience easier in Keyboard 2, it can still get a little messy when typing in the full screen mode as all the typed texts start to fill the screen. I suggest adding an option to keep typed texts displayed only near the top of the screen where the numbers key are. Since people don ‘t use the numbers keys too often, people who don’t like to have texts overlaying on top of the keyboard but still would like the option of using a full sized keyboard should be pleased with such an additional option.

Overall, with its high level of customization, intuitive gesture controls, and a better keyboard experience on the iPhone and iPod Touch, Keyboard 2 is an excellent app for those looking for a bigger keypad on their mobile iOS device. You can type a long essay with ease without the stress of trying to fit your thumbs into that cluttered default keyboard each time you type a letter. Only the lack of an autocorrect feature keeps it from being a must-have keyboard app for those looking for a bigger keyboard on their devices. However, the developer has promised to bring this important feature in future updates. And even without it, users should be able to type comfortably and integrate their daily communication functions with Keyboard 2.
