I bought a used A1243 keyboard that originally wouldn't increase the volume using the f12 key and call up the dashboard with f4.
After puttering around in sys pref, I found, after calling up "expose pane of expose spaces preferences" that changing the dashboard shortcut key from the default f12 to f4 that the volume up works fine.
I still can't get f4 to call dashboard like it does with the bluetooth keyboard.
