Keyboard backlight always comes on when powering on.

I have a mid-2012 15 inch rMBP and since updating to 10.12.2, upon powering on the keyboard backlight always turns on.

This never used to happen before, anyone else with similar issues / solutions? I have already tried resetting SMC and NVRAM to no success.
