Keyboard backlight flickering in snow leopard

I have an early 2011 mbp and i have 2 partitions on with lion and one with snow leopard. the keyboard backlight on lion works fine but on snow leopard I can't turn it down or up with the keys so I downloaded an app and no matter where I have it set all the way off or all the way on it will still randomly flicker. Any ideas why?

What app have you installed?
Have you tried uninstalling it? Does it also happen in another, even temporarily created, user account?

I installed lab tick. It does the same on any account I create.
