Is there a generic way to control how long the keyboard backlight on laptops remains illuminated from Terminal?

In the past, it's been possible to control some aspects of keyboard backlight function from System Preferences.

And it has apparently been possible to programmatically control keyboard backlight timeout on some laptops in other OS's, such as linux.

So I am wondering if there is a hidden mechanism to do this with macOS as well.

Typical Ubuntu response, change permissions on it so it's broken. But not relevant as the described hardware is a Dell.

Mojave exposes the timeout value in System Preferences>Keyboard, I don't have an earlier OS install handy ATM to see where it appeared.

@posguy99 yes, access has been possible through the System Preferences GUI, as I noted in the opening post.

But is there a way to control this through Terminal?
