Go to the International Pane of sys preferences and make sure that you are set to the correct language / locality that matches your keyboard. If you have multiple localities turned on, you may have accidentally switched via keyboard shortcut.

Thanks for your reply. Ive been checking out my international panel but have failed to correct the fault. I have a Swedish keyboard [they have three extra letter in their alphabet, which at the moment I cant access] but since Im a Brit living out here would like to set it up so that all menus are in English but the Swedsih keyboard functions as it should!! in Swedish! It is so strange because as I said before all was functioning fine until yesterday.https://forums.macrumors.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Finally solved it! and to prove it...öäå! Somehow the English button in the Input Menu in the International pane was ticked. So once that was removed all worked fine. Thanks again.
