Let me preface by stating I have searched this quite thoroughly and tried the recommended fixes without success.

Issue: few months ago (i believe after an update to OS?) I noticed suddenly my F5/F6 buttons don't work anymore. On the screen it shows the usual popup when I hit the button, but the lighting level is 0 and below is a circle with a line through it suggesting the function is not available.

I guarantee it is not an issue with me being in bright lighting, as I typically only go to use it when its pitch black and I'm in my bed at night.

Fixes attempted:
1. under Keyboard setting, the "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" is UNchecked
2. SMC reset
3. PRAM reset
4. eventually resorted to an app "LabTick" which allows me to turn on/off and adjust the lighting but not with the F5/F6 buttons, instead do it from my top menu bar on my desktop (not ideal). But at least suggests my lighting works. I eventually moved on and just used LabTick.
5. Randomly I decided last week to upgrade my OS to Mavericks. Had a heck of a time with WiFi disabling and all those known issues so I reverted back to Snow Leopard yesterday. Funny thing I noticed in that week was the F5/F6 buttons worked like they should while I had Mavericks! And suddenly today, no longer functioning and back to the crossed out 0 symbol when i press the buttons.

This must be a OS issue then. In another thread here someone stated on Mountain Lion after an update it stopped working, but kept working when they were using Windows.

Any OTHER suggestions?? I've been so happy with my MBP for over 3 years, and now with various OS updates and upgrades there are way too many bugs and issues. Starting to dislike apple's decline in quality.
