No, they're low power LEDs - they last forever*.

* or at least a lot longer than you'll own that MacBook for!

Would it harm my MacBook if I did not enable the option to turn keyboard lighting off after a certain amount of time?

I just found this option a couple of months ago. My late 2008 MBP never had this option activated, though I did activate it on my 2017 MBP.

I may deactivate it again though, I like the keyboard staying lit. Plus it seems there is a delay in keyboard and trackpad activation until the keyboard lights come back on.
