Keyboard " Middle" Keys Not Working

My kids inherited my 2009 MBP after I bought a new MBP. Recently the middle keys on the keyboard have either not been working or entering gibberish when the button it pushed. For example, the "H" key does not work. If I push the "N" key I might get several unrelated characters all at once, or some other function might happen, like the app closes.

The MBP is old and used hard, but I am curious...other then a failed keyboard, any other ideas that might be the cause?
