Does anyone know a faster way to keyboard navigate dialog boxes in OS X without having to press the tab key 6 or 7 times?

For example, if I'm trying to close a window without saving in textedit, I would like a faster way to select "Don't Save" without having to Tab through the entire dialog box. On Windows you can just use the arrow keys.

I have "Full Keyboard Access" enabled in system preferences. I tried searching some old threads and some people mentioned Cmd+D, but that doesn't work for me.

Cmd+. (cmd+period) lets me select "Cancel."

How do I select "Don't Save"?
