keyboard / password issue

Good morning,
i started my imac 10.6.2 this morning and for the first time it has asked me for my password, which is fine, but the keyboard will not work, i just get that 'bonging' sound when i type.

can anyone help as i am effectively locked out of my own system and am using a friends laptop.

What language is the keyboard setup as? If you use multiple languages or certain ones, you'll get a little drop down box at the login that lets you switch.
