Could be this is off the wall, but I have to ask.

I have a 10 year old IBM/Lexmark split keyboard that is better than any I have ever used.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work well with my iMac because:

1. Some of the Mac-specific keys are missing, and
2. The keyboard has an old IBM-type keyboard connector.

I am wondering if anyone has written software to enable the Mac to accept IBM keyboards and reprogrammed the system to "see" Mac-specific keys where none exist. For example: A F7 key might seen by the computer as F7, but translated to the Mac "disk eject" function. I would guess this could be done with a translation program within the Mac, but I have not found such a program. Dreamware? Off the wall?

Also, I have found an "IBM-keyboard-to-USB" adapter that works some of the time. At other times the Mac does not recognize the keyboard until I unplug it and plug it back in again. Any idea if this can be remedied?

Thanks for any comments you might provide.
