Hi
I'm new to mac and I've currently set the keyboard layout to US. I'm used to working with the windows US International setting. Is this option also availible in Mac OSX?

The only difference between the two settings I've noticed thus far is for when i want to append a 'apostrophe' to for example A I end up with 'A instead of a accent on the A.

How do I change this?

á = option+e then a
à = option+` then a

Have a look at the Keyboard Viewer for more. Go to System Preferences>International>Input Menu. Tick the boxes Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer and Show Input in Menu Bar.
