Keyboard shortcut for the Finder?

May be a silly question. Is there a keyboard shortcut to open the Finder window? I'm so used to using the keyboard in all my apps that having to go down to my dock or some random folder on my desktop seems a bit archaic. Imagine how many split seconds I could shave off each with a shortcut!

CMD+OPTION+SPACE opens a spotlight window, which is pretty much the same.

I guess CMD+N does it too but I gotta click on the desktop first. Is there any way of setting a shortcut that will always open up a finder window no matter what program I am on? Well, I guess you just told me one LOL!

You could set a global shortcut using something like Quicksilver or Spark to run an applescript that activates the Finder.
