Is there a keyboard shortcut for Mac OS similar to the windows key + L to lock the computer to the login screen?
I know if I'm away from my mac air long enough, it will time out and require me to log in to access the air again but I'd like to be able to do that when I have to leave the air for more than a few mins and not wait for it to time out.
I have looked at several pages regarding shortcuts but I haven't seen the shortcut I was looking for.
Any suggestions?

There are a few methods.

Click the padlock icon on your Menu Bar and choose Lock Screen:

Or go to System Preferences > Security and check "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver"
Then you can either close the lid on a Mac notebook or Command-Option-Eject to activate sleep mode.

Or you can use a Hot Corner to activate the screen saver.
