I have it setup so that command+number opens a bookmark in the favourite bar but in the current tab. Is there a way to open it in a new tab? And maybe even make it the active one?

If you have the bar visible, you can hold the command key then click the favorite and that will open it in a new tab. But I don't know of a KB shortcut to do that.
