After launching Mail for macOS, the keyboard commands for "Mark as Read" and "Mark as Unread" (option + command + R, shift + command + U respectively) don't work initially. If I click on "Message" in the menu bar to briefly show the Message menu, then release, these commands start working.

This happens on two Macs running Sequoia 15.3.2 - an M1 Max Mac Studio and an 16" M4 Pro Macbook Pro.

Anybody seen this and found a solution?

shift-cmd-R opens a reply to the currently-selected message, and works as long as a message is selected.

shift-cmd-U as a read-unread toggle works for me, from the moment I open the Mail app without clicking anything.

If you've mapped the keys to something else, maybe that's the issue?

I meant option-cmd-R for "Mark as read". Fixed in original post.

What machine and OS are you running?

opt-cmd-R seems to toggle whether the reply-to field is shown.

MacOS Sequoia, 2024 MBP.

Ah, missed that. Also, I forgot I'd been using Ergonis' Key Cue app - I don't even remember why, at the moment.

I removed the Key Cue customizations, and now shift-cmd-U toggles between read and un-read, which is fine.

Thanks!
