I'm blown away that there is no easy provision for controlling system volume with a (non Apple) keyboard. Is there a way to make macros for raising, lowering and muting the volume that I am overlooking?

PTH Volume System Preference hasn't worked right in a long time, but I was limping along with it until 10.9.5, which it wont launch in at all.

I even tried some Applescript I found online with a macro. That worked for a day or two, but is now ineffective -- maybe a Restart is needed, but that seems pretty lame.

Any other ideas for controlling/muting Mac volume with a macro? Thanks.

Try Spark: http://www.shadowlab.org/softwares/spark.php
It is unsigned, so to open it for the first time you need to Control-click the icon and choose Open from the shortcut menu. It allows you to create shortcuts for many system actions, not just volume up and down. And it's free.
