what is it with apple, that you cant export your keychain items?

there is a menu item "export", which is greyed out. this is the status since years.
is there any circumstance you can use this feature?

i know you can sync your passwords by icloud to a new mac.

but what is if you do not want to use icloud, specially in such a sensitive matter?
and what is if you need a pc for work and want to transfer all or some your passwords over?
you are just f@$%ed?

there is keychaindump (working till yosemite) and some applescript tricks,
but that is not what i expect of a professional os to handle a pretty common need.

it never gets active. i tried:
- activate one password item
- double click it to have the small window open
- unlock the password

what i would expect:
- to be able to select all items, select export,
select plaintext, csv or whatever format and have the stuff in a file

i like when apple protects my passwords from the bad world outside,
but not when apple protects my passwords from myself!

Here is how to export a complete keychain: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH20120?locale=en_US

i know. but you cant do this with the "Local Items" keychain.
plus what do you do, when you want to transfer your logins to a non-mac computer?

The export option is, I believe, only available for certificates, not for passwords. If you click on a certificate, you should find the export option is active.

true, thanks for this! its the cruical info...
you can export certificates and (public) keys,
but you can't export (internet or application) passwords!
which i find very odd.
