Apple released Keynote 1.1 today. Improvements are detailed:

- Improved PowerPoint import and export compatibility
- Enhanced performance of imported QuickTime video
- Option to maintain 3D transitions within projected screen area (non-clipping rotation)
- Improved interaction and feedback while working with slides in the Navigator
- Option to down-sample images upon import
- Reduced size of Keynote themes and files
- Reduced size of exported PDF files
- Optimized playback of exported QuickTime files
- Ability to jump to specific slide during slideshow
- Ability to show series labels on vertical bar charts

Keynoteuser.com has already posted a brief Review of Keynote 1.1.

sweet

Just another few reasons not to use Microsoft PowerPoint.

I make PDF files all the times out of Keynote and they are never that large. Oh well, smaller is always better on the internet, so I am not complaining.

Does anyone get the impression that Apple has given up on beta testing, and every product they ship now contains elements that should have been sorted out before release.

Still, good for them getting a useful version of Keynote out, finally.

...now.... time to take on the rest of MS Office ;)

So, does this work now?

I know it 'works', but I wonder, does this release address the concerns of those that thought things were missing - things that kept them in a PowerPoint world...

I'll never leave newbie status at this rate...

I'm loving this, more updates Apple, more!!!

Anyone think an iDVD update is next? The quicktime update said it had improvements for iMovie, Keynote and iDVD. It's just a shame I don't use iDVD!

AppleMatt (sorry for off-topic post)

arrrrrrr! this update upsets me! here I was letting my sister use keynote yesterday for a presentation, and I burned a copy of an exported quicktime movie last night, and what happens? an update that would have helped the situation! she was having trouble playing the QT export on her friend's TiBook, and had the update been a day earlier, the problem may have been resolved! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

p.s. it was the first time she had used keynote, and she loved it! she is a designer, and has been looking for a new computer, but leaning toward a PC (dell to be specific [ewwww!]), but after a few hours on keynote, I caught her logged onto the Apple Store (through Safari of course) looking at powerbooks. maybe she has been won over! except for this bloody annoying update. . .

I have tried about three times to make PDF's out of Keynote and each time they were not small files given the number of slides (15-20 slides, mostly text, light 72 dpi graphics). I hope this update makes it work better or if someone could tell me what I am doing wrong!? It very well could be operator error on my part.

They took care of the two things I was waiting on -- better integration of QT and the ability to jump back and forth through the presentation.

Goodbye, PPT. It's going to be a Keynote Father's Day I think.

Wow, these updates are coming fast and furious now. But man, I could have used this yesterday for a presentation I had to give to a class of city and regional planning students. I needed to jump around during the presentation a little, and had to stop and start the slide show. Oh well better late than never. It sure is fun to use keynotes 3d transitions and watch people's jaws drop (the one's who are used to PP anyway). :D I love seeing software envy among PC users, espescially when you tell them they can't run it on their computers. And then to rub it in I demonstrate how I can run any of their programs on my computer with virtual PC. Then they want to know if they can get a virtual mac program, and I say no, sorry; you could buy a mac though!

How do you jump to a new slide while in the play mode?

Can you go to any slide you want?

I believe you press the number of the slide you want to jump to, or the number of slides you want to jump ahead, and then press +

AppleMatt

That does the trick. And if you hit the number and - it goes back.

This is really only effective if you have a slide outline printed out that you are referring to or if you are using the dual monitor trick where your notebook is showing the notes.

I like this.

All I really need now...

Is for Apple to figure out a better way of importing equations from PowerPoint files. I'm sick of having to redo all of them using Equation Service...

Other than that it does a better job of importing PPT files than PPT.

#1 on my wish list

Now, if only Apple could include the ability to play MP3/AAC files independently of the current slide (e.g., allow you to play music in the background of the entire presentation).

Can't you do that using iTunes?

Following on to mustang's question, can you make Keynote run a slideshow with timed slide changes and a music track playing through the whole thing?

Eric,

No. You cannot. Timed slides are huge on my list. So far, you have to export to QT to do it.

I do what Flowbee says about music. I use iTunes in the background when it is in the loop mode in QT. During a presentation, it is distracting for my needs but it would be nice if they would add the feature.

Flash export

OK, Keynote still needs to be able to export to a Flash movie format (i.e. export elements, not render each slide to a JPEG).

This would make web development much easier - take a PPT file, Keynote it and then Flash it!

And a slide sorter. This is very useful mode in PPT for re-ordering large slide shows.

AppleMatt,

How in the world did you figure that one out? I have been scouring Apple's Help file and online support all day, and I couldn't find that information listed anywhere!

Thanks,
Scott
