Keynote: custom theme

I have a custom theme for keynote. One of the master contains a few textboxes whose content needs to be edited for each slide.
I can add them to the master slide, but when clicking them inside a normal slide I get a warning they can not be edited. Is there some way around this?
I don't want to make a new master slide for every other slide. I like to keep the theme as simple as possible
